On 15 December 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) presented its policy strategy paper on Africa, entitled "The Partnership with Africa" (Italian text).

This document outlines Italian foreign policy towards Africa in the following areas: peace and security; governance and human rights; migration and mobility; cooperation and investment; sustainable economic development; the fight against climate change; and cultural and scientific collaboration.

The document indicates "Mediterranean Africa" as one of the areas of geographical priority for Italian foreign policy on the continent.
